Kids' Church 2005 Takes Centre Stage
by Jade Wong, August 2005
I remember the days when “Sunday School” was held upstairs, whilst the adults would be downstairs in Sunday Morning worship. Those were the days when we could hear the kids thumping on the thin ceilings above with their funny antics and all. Occasionally, you would hear the sounds of something being “accidentally” breaking, with quietness all of a sudden.
Fast forward to 2005, and you’d definitely notice a change of scenario. The people thumping their overgrown feet upstairs would be the adults in their “coffeetiam” settings whilst the children are given the luxury of the ground floor to play with.
Of course, we still get the sounds of things breaking, squeals of laughter, and thumping of feet, but you’d definitely notice that there are more than one chaperone keeping their eyes on the kids.
Kids' Church Bangsar Gospel Centre 2005 has been an amazing reach out to the kids, from as young as 2 years old till 14 years old - in terms of structure, activities as well as a change of learning methods.
The “Ang Pau” Points
Nowadays, you don’t get the “stars” or the “ticks” on your books to show what merits you have, instead we give the kids “points” which are basically red color slips of manila card board. Points are given out to kids who come early, answer questions and participate during games as well as for good behavior.
Object Lessons
Teaching methods have also changed as we have what we call “Object Lessons”. Biblical principles are taught using everyday objects which the children can relate to. One lesson that I remember fondly (even as a teacher) would be “Jesus Calms the Storm”. Frank used a bowl of water, sprinkled some pepper on the water, and explained that the “pepper” represented “the storms in our lives”. He then demonstrated how “Jesus calmed the storm” by adding some detergent to the “peppered water” which then immediately parted!
(Apologies if I can’t accurately remember the details, but I assure you the effect and the biblical principles were correctly imparted!)
Reviews
Unlike my forgetful self, kids DO remember the lessons and you’d be amazed at the answers that they give. Points are given to kids who can remember the memory verse, lessons as well as bible stories told.
Bible Stories & Plays
Kids love to act and this is where they take centre stage when they volunteer to act out bible stories, whilst the teachers guide them along. Also, you’d be surprised when the kids actually sit down quietly for almost 15 minutes, whilst listening to bibles stories being told either by teachers, or by using the “slide projector”!
Games
And of course, games which our in-house creative games director, Ernest Yeap & previously Winston Lim would come up with ingenious ideas to keep them entertained, and coming back for more!
Praise & Worship
Last, but definitely not least, children singing praises to the Almighty God are precious moments to behold. Kids are a sincere lot and this is one time you see them giving glory to Jesus. Kids as young as 2 years old till 14 years old are learning how to place Jesus as their first priority, which are definitely treasured moments, both to God, and to the parents and themselves.
*Bring your kids, and we’ll give you a breather for at least two hours whilst you go “pasar malam” shopping!*
